Chapter 15

Leia

The next few days were a blur. We woke up every morning before dawn and went running. We trained for at least three hours, and I hoped I wouldn’t have to run longer than that.

Zane had gone back to their pack territory alone and told Alpha Jerome the news. While he was elated at the news his son had a compliable mate, it ruffled his feathers that he needed a replacement for the run.

Zane returned later that night and has been with us since. From what I gather and have overheard, he felt their dad was acting odd and a tad bit obsessive.

Neither Garrett nor Zane understood why he was so upset that we were taking our time. Most didn’t wait long, but they also didn’t find out they were adopted at the same time as they found their mate, either.

A wave of nausea hits my stomach hard, and I eat the crackers I had laying nearby.

“Sick again?” I jump at the sudden interruption. I hadn’t heard anyone approach.

“Garrett, I swear if you keep scaring me, I’m going to bash you with the nearest object.”

He chuckles. “I’ve never seen a wolf be startled so easily.”

“Yes, well, I’m a freak of nature with the whole blood sugar issues and now, I’m startled easily.” I scoff and continue eating my cracker. He’s lucky I didn’t get choked, then I probably would have thrown something at him.

“I hate to interrupt your cracker break, but your dad wants to see us.” He bites his lip between his teeth and waits for my response.

I chew the cracker slowly and swallow. “Okay, fine. Let’s go.”

The walk was short to my dad’s office. My nerves were causing me to shake with anticipation because I knew something was going on again.

I had two and a half weeks left before the run, but only if Alpha Jerome didn’t get it approved to hold it in three days.

As we walked into the office, I notice Izzy and Zane are already present.

“I brought you all in here today to give you the official news. As you know, Alpha Jerome had requested a few days ago that the run be pulled up in a week, which is fast approaching us. Since losing Zane, that put a monkey wrench, so to speak, in his plan and held him off for the last few days.” His pause gives me a little hope that things are looking up. A whoosh of air leaves my lungs and I smile. It was great news for once, and I was hoping the other shoe wasn’t about to drop.

“That leaves me with the rest of the news.” My heart dropped. I exasperatedly look around and the jitters quickly return.

He looks to me, then at Garrett and takes a deep breath. “Garrett, what do you know about your cousin Boris?”

Cousin? I look between Zane and Garrett as they eye each other with wide eyes. My stomach twists in knots because I know those faces cannot mean that its good news.
